How to Use the HOVERAir AQUA Lighthouse

The Ultimate Guide: How to Use the HOVERAir AQUA Lighthouse

The HOVERAir AQUA Lighthouse is the dedicated wearable control hub for your waterproof flying camera. Because you can't constantly check a phone while on the water, the Lighthouse lets you manage everything entirely hands-free. By using centimeter-level RTK technology, it creates an invisible tether between you and the AQUA. This ensures the camera stays safely in range and locked on the action, even when waves temporarily block its line of sight.

What Can the HOVERAir AQUA Lighthouse Do?

The Lighthouse is a two-in-one device: a wearable tracker and a compact controller. It puts essential flight controls right on your arm, replacing the need for a smartphone on the water. Here is what it does for you:

1. Keeps You in the Frame

Standard drones can lose their target if a wave blocks the camera's view. By emitting an RTK signal, the Lighthouse provides Precision Tracking. This maintains centimeter-level positional accuracy between you and the drone, ensuring the AQUA stays locked onto you even if you are briefly out of sight.

2. Prevents the AQUA from Drifting Away

Open water can be unpredictable, but the Lighthouse creates a Virtual Tether with the AQUA. If the drone drifts too far from you, it detects the distance and automatically flies the drone back within a preset range, giving you total confidence to fly without worrying about losing your device.

3. Provides Phone-Free Control

You can't comfortably use a touchscreen with wet hands or while holding a paddle. The Lighthouse serves as a compact Hands-free control unit, letting you manage takeoffs, return-to-home commands, and directional fine-tuning entirely by feel.

4. Customizes Your Angles in Real Time

The Lighthouse's CoPilot feature lets you instantly fine-tune the camera's angle, distance, and height right in the middle of your activity. While the AQUA's AI safely handles the complex flying and tracking, this allows you to effortlessly create dynamic, cinematic shots without needing any drone piloting skills.

HOVERAir AQUA Lighthouse Setup and Connection

The Lighthouse requires a quick one-time activation and pairing process before your first flight.

1. Activate the Battery

Charge the Lighthouse to activate it for the first time. A pulsing light indicates charging, while a solid light confirms a full charge. Once charged, ensure the USB-C port cover is tightly sealed to keep it waterproof.

2. Power On and Off

Press and hold the Power button for two seconds until the blue indicator light pulses slowly. The device will shut down automatically if the battery falls below 1% to protect the unit.

3. Pair with the AQUA

For your first setup, hold Up  and  Left Spin buttons for three seconds and follow the pairing prompt on the AQUA's screen. A blue light and chime will confirm the connection. After this, they will pair automatically every time you turn them on. To reset Bluetooth later, use the same Up  and  Left Spin shortcut. To manually enable Wi-Fi, hold Down and Right Spin for three seconds.

Control Ring Functions

The Lighthouse features four pairs of buttons evenly distributed around its outer control ring. These allow you to adjust your shot in real time:

  • Distance: Move the drone closer or further away.
  • Altitude: Raise or lower flight height.
  • Direction: Shift the drone's position to the front, back, left, or right.
  • Orbit: Start an orbit, and control its direction and speed.

Essential On-Water Button Shortcuts

Memorize these shortcuts to manage your flight seamlessly:

  • One-Touch Takeoff: Press the dedicated Takeoff button to instantly launch the drone from the water.
  • Instant Return (RTH): Short press the Return button to recall the drone to your location at any time. You can use the control ring to fine-tune its position or angle at any time during the return.
  • Auto-Landing Cancellation: If the drone begins an automatic landing while in follow mode, simply press any button on the Lighthouse. This instantly cancels the landing and forces the AQUA to continue following you.

(Note: Always check your surroundings and ensure a safe flight altitude is set before triggering a remote takeoff or RTH.)

Best Practices for Using the Lighthouse on the Water

To keep a strong signal between the AQUA and the Lighthouse, and to get the best footage out on the water, follow these practical tips:

1. Wear the Lighthouse on Your Non-Dominant Arm

Strap the Lighthouse to your non-dominant arm, so your dominant hand is free to operate it. This allows your more coordinated main hand to accurately press the buttons by feel, preventing missed clicks in choppy water. It also lets you quickly switch between gripping your gear—like a SUP paddle—and controlling the drone.

2. Double-Lock the Strap for Heavy Waves

High-speed wipeouts in sports like surfing or foiling can generate massive water pressure. To prevent your gear from being ripped off by a crashing wave, always use the armband’s double-lock method. Make sure the velcro is fully sealed and tuck away any loose ends before you paddle out.

3. Keep the Antenna Facing the Sky

The AQUA uses the Lighthouse's RTK signal for centimeter-level tracking. This signal requires a clear line of sight to the sky to work best. When strapping it to your arm, position the main face upward so it stays exposed during your normal stance or paddling motion.

4. Keep Both Devices Above Water to Reconnect

Water naturally blocks wireless and RTK signals. If either the AQUA or your Lighthouse goes underwater, the connection will temporarily drop. Because AQUA floats on its own, your only job is to make sure the Lighthouse is out of the water. Once both devices are above the surface, the system will instantly reconnect and regain its tracking lock.

Fly Phone-Free with the Lighthouse!

The Lighthouse is now ready to serve as your dedicated link to the AQUA. With the shortcuts memorized and the antenna positioned correctly, you can manage every shot entirely by feel. Power on, launch from the water, and let the RTK tether keep you framed while you focus on the action.

FAQs About HOVERAir AQUA Lighthouse

Q1: How does RTK work? Do you use a base station? Will I have to pay for a third party service provider?

A: RTK is used to correct errors in GPS signal to provide accurate positioning data down to the centimeter, as opposed to GPS which can have errors up to a few meters. HOVERAir AQUA and Lighthouse are both equipped with RTK hardware which they use to accurately position each other supporting accurate follow even when the user is occluded and VirtualTether. Unlike traditional implementations of RTK, AQUA and Lighthouse do not need to know their absolute position in the world which removes the need for a base station or third-party service provider.

Q2: Does Lighthouse support Copilot?

A: Yes! And with a larger range than on the PRO/PROMAX.

Q3: What is the purpose of the Lighthouse?

A: The Lighthouse is AQUA’s dedicated companion, ensuring the drone always knows where you are even when you’re out of sight. Through continuous real-time connection with RTK positioning, it keeps AQUA precisely on track in complex water environments.

At the same time, the Lighthouse serves as your intuitive controller: with one press, you can take off, land, or trigger Return-to-Home, while the control ring lets you easily adjust angles, height, and distance so you can stay focused on your activity.

Q4: What’s the maximum operating range between AQUA and the Lighthouse?

A: The maximum operating range is between 100 and 300 meters over water (actual distance may vary based on local regulations). This is achieved by using low-frequency communication to overcome the limitations of standard video transmission signals. Unlike high-frequency waves that drop from kilometers of range on land to just 10 meters over water due to signal attenuation, our specialized system ensures your connection remains strong and steady across the waves. (Note: Range may vary depending on regional regulations.)

Q5: Would AQUA fly back when it is disconnected with the Lighthouse?

A: Yes. If AQUA loses connection with the Lighthouse, it will automatically return to the last location sent by the Lighthouse before disconnection. This ensures your device stays within reach and prevents it from drifting away unexpectedly.
